^This female caught a large green grasshopper (Schistocerca shoshone) on the ground, then flew with it to cover to eat.
Black-headed grosbeaks are migrants and possible breeders in Oasis Valley, present much of the summer except June. Males in spring actively sing in the cottonwoods, and late in the summer I have heard the calls of immature birds. They breed in the pinyon pine habitats, springs, and riparian canyons of the surrounding ranges, such as the Grapevine Mountains 20 miles to the west, and the juveniles I see in Oasis Valley may be post-nesting wanderers from there.
