^October adult in fall plumage.
Chipping sparrows are mostly spring and fall migrants through Oasis Valley, and are present in varying numbers through the summer (except June). They nest in Nevada mountain ranges in pinyon-juniper woodlands and ponderosa forests. They breed in the Grapevine Mountains nearby, 20 miles to the west.

In spring, migrant males are more colorful with a rufus-red cap that they lack in fall. Their trilling song can sometimes be heard in spring. Otherwise they give a weak "tsip" call all year.

^Running. These small sparrows like to feed on the ground in weedy open areas, often mixing with White-crowned sparrow and juncos.
