A fairly common resident, hooting can often be heard at night from cottonwoods and other trees in Oasis Valley. At dusk their big forms can be seen silently flying out over the rabbitbrush, saltbush, creosote desert, and saltgrass meadows to hunt. I once found a disgorged pellet of inedible parts that contained bits of a scorpion. By day they can be surprisingly camouflaged sleeping on a broken willow trunk among the leaves, their color patterning blending in with the wood. They probably nest in the region, although I have seen no sign yet.
