^Bright male Indigo bunting migrant in creosote. I photographed this bird while camping in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in southern Arizona. But lately Nevada has had an influx of this species, in 2009 (below).

September 5, 2009, this female hung out in a garden near Beatty, Nevada, feeding on the dry seeds of weedy Barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli), a Eurasian meadow grass that grows in late summer.

^The female showing slightly streaked breast, in a clover patch.

^In a weedy garden with English plantain (Plantago major) and Crabgrass (Cynodon dactylon). A green Barnyardgrass stem hangs overhead.

^Climbing about on stems to reach the ripe seeds.

^Picking off the grass seeds one by one.

^The bunting flew about to a new grass stem...

...sometimes having trouble balancing on the plant stalks.

^Bending to reach grass seeds on the stalk.

^On a garden fencepost.

^Female Indigo bunting.
