These tiny birds are present on and off throughout the year in Oasis Valley, especially in October and November. They travel in small groups, making soft twittering calls as they fly into trees.
^This one eating thistle seeds shows its pointed bill well. They favor thistle seeds and will visit thistle plants to do the extraction themselves. I have also seen them eat willow and cottonwood buds and catkins in spring, sagebrush seeds, wildflower seeds, and the nuts from the cones of conifers.
Pine siskins nest in higher coniferous forests in Nevada.
