Oasis Valley sees a few of these characteristically Arizonan doves every year, in May-June and again in August-September. In spring I may hear their funny song: "Who cooks for you?" Nesting occurs in the Mojave Desert zone of southern Nevada, in Laughlin, and possibly elsewhere such as Ash Meadows south of us. The Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Nevada (Floyd etal. 2007, University of Nevada, Reno), says they may be expanding their range in Nevada.
In our area they can be found around cottonwood groves, mesquite, riparian areas, and houses, visiting bird feeders. I saw one dominate and chase away a larger Eurasian collared dove once on the ground -- raising its shoulder and back feathers to appear larger and slapping the other dove with its wings.
